Automation and Control System – The Difference

Are you aware of the difference between Automation and Control Systems? Learn more about this topic in this section. So, tune in to find out.

The Difference Between Automation and Control System

Generally, when you are in the process of designing a control system, you might have heard or seen people using these two terms interchangeably. Well, that is not true. These two terms are used to refer to different kinds of controls. Thus, understanding this difference between Automation and Control systems is very important. This will ensure that you use the right term while talking to someone about your design.

There are several differences between Automation and Control systems that you need to be aware of. So, let’s take a look at them one by one.

Control System

A control system can be defined as a combination of hardware, software, and human interaction. It is where the objective is to achieve a pre-planned objective like automatic operations in an industrial setting.

In addition, Control System is a system that is used to control an industrial process or machine for achieving the desired result. The control system also consists of control loops that are performed by programmable logic controllers, computers, actuators, sensors, etc.

Automation

Automation is the process of using computers to control devices to carry out pre-planned tasks or operations. It can be used for repetitive or consistent tasks. Automation is also carried out by computers where the control is done by programming. Thus, some of the examples are automated teller machines, elevator controllers, and automatic draper machines.

The Functions of Automation and Control System

The functions of the Automation and Control System are as follows:

Automation:

1. Automation is used for controlling and regulating machines and other equipment that are used to carry out repetitive and consistent tasks.

2. It can be carried out by computers and it uses programs to control the devices.

3. It is used in industries where there is a need for high accuracy and precision, time to market, and reduced human intervention.

Control System:

1. Control System is used to control the machines, processes, or operations of an industrial setting for achieving a pre-planned objective.

2. The objective can be achieved by the process of feedback loops, sensors, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), computers, and actuators. It can also be achieved by a manual control system.

3. It is used for controlling and regulating machines and other equipment that are used to carry out repetitive and consistent tasks.

4. It can be carried out manually or by using a computer program.

5. Control System is used in industries where there is a need for high accuracy and precision, time to market, and reduced human intervention.

Why Is It Important to Know?

Knowing the difference between Automation and Control systems is important for several reasons. So, the first reason is that it will help you to understand the functionality of a control system. Another reason is that it will help you to communicate effectively with people who deal with the design of a control system.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we can say that these two terms, Automation and Control System, are used to refer to different kinds of controls. Also, there are differences between Automation and Control systems that you need to be aware of.

Moreover, as stated, if you know the differences, you can communicate more effectively with other people. The last thing that I would like to mention here is that if you have any confusion about these two terms or anything else related to control systems.
